Ching Ching Cheng

Exploring identities psychologically in different ethnicity backgrounds, cultures, genders, and environment conditions is my multidisciplinary practice through drawings, paintings, sculptures, installation, photography and video work. Human beings naturally change and adapt their living into different environments.

When people migrate, they bring their cultures and identities with them. Sometimes the culture and identity that they bring with them changes and adapts to that new environment, and it changes to a modified new culture or a subculture, and a distinct identity. Adapting, resisting, transforming, and accepting are stages of in between. What we once were and what we have become is a cognitive representation of one’s own identity. I always put myself in the situation to make the subject matter more personal to me, and my work gives an intimate and personal account of my own experiences, while open and encourage the viewers for further discussions about the connections and bridges of global society.

Art Meets Architecture at the Fine Arts Building is pleased to present “Permutations”, an exhibition of sculptures by Ching Ching Cheng.

Opening in conjunction with the August 9th Downtown Art Walk and curated by Nat George, the exhibition will focus on two complementary bodies of work by the artist in which she transforms and rearranges humble, everyday materials into sculptural objects that now hold entirely different meanings.

The first body of work is sourced from Cheng’s “Build” series, which explores identities found in everyday life through object-portraits that represent her as an artist, a wife, and a mother. Using domestic aprons, Cheng transforms the fabric into shapes reminiscent of building and architectural components. The second body of work comes from the artist’s “Camera Sculpture” series, featuring exquisite “cameras” created with newsprint, books, negatives, and resin. The sculptures speak to Cheng’s childhood fascination with mechanical devices, such as the camera, which exists solely to capture memories. For her, the process of building these camera objects represents the process our brain goes through while storing memories, making a connection between what we see, what we remember, and what is actually there.

As part of the monthly Downtown LA Art Walk, an opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 9th from 6-8 pm in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building at 811 W. 7th Street, featuring Live Jazz by Granville “Danny” Young, and tasty flavors from local Brazilian favorite, Woodspoon. The artist will be in attendance, and the artwork will be available for purchase.

The self-guided public art phenomenon known as the Downtown Art Walk brings thousands of art lovers and community members to an ever-evolving Downtown Los Angeles. With exciting and unique offerings, Downtown celebrates the arts on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the galleries, artist studios, and cultural institutions of the Historic Core, including Art Meets Architecture at the Fine Arts Building.
